Overview and Benefits
Suicide Awareness & Prevention Curriculum
Turning awareness into action requires a high-quality level of training. This is why we partnered with Dr. Scott Poland, an international expert on youth suicide prevention, to create a comprehensive Suicide Awareness & Prevention eLearning program for school staff.
Designed for today’s environment in which time is at a premium and flexibility is a must, this training program offers a highly engaging online curriculum.
Suicide Awareness & Prevention Training
Style: Asynchronous, online
Duration: 4-6 hours, at your own pace
Scope: Participants will receive an in-depth presentation on youth suicide prevention. Learners work independently at their own pace and on their own schedule to complete 7 modules, each one introduced by Dr. Poland.
Objectives: Participants will gain a thorough understanding of the risk factors and warning signs of suicide as well as the legal requirements. They will also be able to describe the process of intervention, referral, re-entry and post-vention. At the conclusion of the training, participants can apply their knowledge to create/enhance their school’s suicide prevention efforts and support students throughout the process.
Knowing the Warning Signs
Step One – Awareness
Knowing the warning signs a student displays as they head down a path toward suicide or self-harm is critical. Staff and students are regularly educated on the warning signs with the intention that a teacher or peer will tell someone who can get that student some help. In fact, most states require all staff to receive 2 hours of suicide awareness training.
However, the problem of youth suicide is too big for awareness alone.
It’s time to turn awareness into action.
Proper Training Helps Mitigate Risk
Step Two – Training
Behavioral threat assessment and crisis teams and all school staff members need comprehensive training on the step-by-step approach to helping students who may be on a path of suicide or self-harm. This includes knowing how to:
- Make basic assessments with the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS)
- Talk with the student and make a referral to a mental health professional
- Help the student during re-entry
- Create schoolwide post-vention strategies
Schools are ethically and legally responsible for recognizing and responding to suicidal thinking and behavior. They are also required to document every step in the assessment and intervention process. Proper training helps mitigate these risks and reduce your liability.
