Navigate360’s JP Guilbault and Dr. Joe McKenna to Present Trends Shaping School Culture and Climate at the National Forum on Education Policy

Guilbault, McKenna will join other education thought leaders at the National Forum on Education Policy to share all-new data on students’ physical safety and social-emotional needs

RICHFIELD, OHIO (July 13, 2023) Navigate360, the nation’s leader in K–12 school safety and student wellness solutions, announces JP Guilbault, Chief Executive Officer at Navigate360, Karen Barnes, Ph.D., LCSW, Threat Assessment & Mental Health Officer at the Maine School Safety Center, Maine Department of Education and Dr. Joe McKenna, Ph.D., Vice President of Threat Detection & Prevention Program Development at Navigate360, will present at the Education Commission of the States’ National Forum on Education Policy July 12–14, in Minneapolis. Guilbault will share all-new data on how K-12 district personnel report feeling prepared to address physical safety and their students’ social-emotional or character education needs.

Nationwide, educators report experiencing more behavioral problems among students—and 44 states and the District of Columbia now require a school safety plan in statute or regulation. According to new data from Navigate360, educators at the largest school districts feel less prepared to address physical safety than educators at mid- and small-sized school districts. In addition, just 55% of educators at urban school districts feel prepared to address their students’ well-being. The data comes from a new Navigate360 survey of superintendents, academic affairs specialists, and safety operations personnel in education in June 2023.

The session, titled “Data Trends Shaping School Culture and Climate,” will take place on Thursday, July 13, from 11:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. CDT at the conference. The session will delve into the research findings, as well as explore how educators nationwide are adapting to better support their students’ non-academic needs and take a proactive approach in supporting their educators and students.

“With the rising need for non-academic support in schools, physical safety and mental wellness remain both critical and challenging for education leaders, families and students to address,” said JP Guilbault, Chief Executive Officer at Navigate360. “Students cannot reach their full academic potential unless they feel safe and supported. Their basic needs—including physical safety and mental wellness—must be met first.”

In addition to discussing the data, the session will explore:

  • The differences in feelings toward physical safety preparedness at urban school districts, compared to rural and suburban school districts
  • How equipped urban, rural and suburban educators feel to address their students’ changing social-emotional needs
  • The diverse and different challenges at large, medium and small school districts
  • How school districts are adapting to better support their students’ non-academic needs

“It is crucial we come together to learn from one another and find new ways to strengthen our schools’ culture and climate,” said Dr. Joe McKenna, Vice President of Threat Detection & Prevention Program Development at Navigate360. “We are excited to join some of the leading thought leaders in the education space to discuss how education leaders are implementing layered, proactive and data-driven approaches to improving school culture and climate.”

Partnering with state policymakers, The Education Commission of the States provides personalized support, connecting education leaders with each other. An annual conference, the National Forum on Education Policy brings together education leaders to discuss the most pressing issues in state education policy.
