NaviGate Provides Software Wizard for School Safety Plans

The wonderful Wizard of Oz! The almighty Oz was omnipotent – all-seeing, all-knowing – bestowing such amazing gifts as a heart for the Tin Man and a brain for the Scarecrow. The power was impressive. Then we grew older and realized Oz was”giving” the Lion, Scarecrow and Tin Man something they already had and they just needed the Wizard of Oz to tell them they had courage, smarts and a loving heart. The power was still impressive and even inspiring at least it was to the band, America who included the message in their song, Tin Man back in 1974.

This concept of a”wizard” giving you something you already have is mainstream in today’s culture, thanks to technology. According to one definition of a wizard is a software feature that guides users through complex procedures with step-by-step instruction. If you’ve ever installed a printer or set up a wireless network, you probably had help from a wizard like this:

Companies such as Intuit, H&R Block and TaxAct create wizards to help people prepare and file their own taxes. Along the same lines of complexity, filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) takes all kinds of wizardry. If taxes and applying for government money aren’t enough of a challenge, there are even wizards to create human relationship matches!

So why not a wizard for school safety plans? They are certainly complex enough. Wouldn’t it be helpful if you could answer questions based on your state’s safety plan compliance requirements (or the FEMA recommendations) and the wizard would give you a finished safety plan? Then you could copy that plan (and tweak if necessary) for each school in your district. Next year, copy all your plans from the previous school year, make edits as needed, upload to state agencies as needed and you’re all set.

School safety is critical and needs focus. You shouldn’t have to spend your time deciphering compliance jargon or reinventing the wheel. Safety plan wizards take the information you already know and guide you through the development of a sound plan based on school safety best practices.

Once created or updated, safety plans can live in your secure online NaviGate Prepared portal where teachers and staff can access the current version. No need to send out new printed documents or supply updated pages and hope everyone keeps their safety binder current. Now you can focus on implementing and practicing safety measures and leave the busy work to the wizard!
