Tennessee School Safety is Top Priority for Governor Lee

$230 Million Funding Legislation Aims to Support Comprehensive Approach to Student Safety

Governor Bill Lee has signed new legislation to improve Tennessee school safety, following the active shooter attack at Covenant School in Nashville. The bill enacts a multi-tiered accountability plan to ensure exterior school doors are locked while students are present and requires private security officers to receive active shooter training prior to being posted at schools. It also requires every school district to establish threat assessment teams to identify and address potential threats, and develop annual safety plans that include a newly required incident command drill for school leaders and law enforcement.

The Tennessee school safety bill provides a significant funding boost of $230 million for school safety measures. This includes:

  • $30 million for Homeland Security agents across all 95 counties
  • $140 million for one full-time, armed School Resource Officer (SRO) for every public school
  • $40 million for public school security upgrades
  • $14 million for private school security upgrades
  • $8 million for additional School-Based Behavioral Health Liaisons across the state

With this funding, Tennessee is taking a comprehensive approach to addressing school safety concerns, focusing on both physical security measures and mental health resources.
