Navigate360 launches a new Comprehensive School Threat Assessment Guidelines (CSTAG) training program
In our ongoing effort to help students achieve their best in safe and secure learning settings, we’re excited to announce the launch of our new Comprehensive School Threat Assessment Guidelines (CSTAG) training program. This training complements our Behavioral Threat Assessment technology and empowers schools’ threat assessment teams to address student behavioral challenges in a positive, proactive manner.
We developed the CSTAG training in close collaboration with Dr. Dewey Cornell, a clinical psychologist and expert on adolescent homicide and violence prevention. This proactive, holistic training will provide threat assessment teams with the knowledge and skills they need to address potentially threatening behavior, instill confidence in learning environments and ultimately save lives.
Helping Students — and School Leaders — Thrive
Dr. Cornell developed the CSTAG model upon which the training is based. The CSTAG model adopts a problem-solving approach to violence prevention, placing an emphasis on avoiding both over- and underreaction to student threats.
Training in such methodologies helps schools help their students thrive: A randomized controlled study showed that schools trained in threat assessment methodology have reduced rates of long-term suspensions and increased use of counseling for students who threaten violence, compared with schools without such training.
The CSTAG training features both independent and interactive virtual or in-person team learning. This blended learning approach increases retention rates and reinforces real-world application of CSTAG methods. In fact, research shows that CSTAG training participants demonstrate substantial gains in threat assessment knowledge (34% pre-test accuracy versus 78% post-test accuracy) and show a high degree of threat-classification accuracy after training.

Because behavioral threat assessment teams are multidisciplinary by nature, training on the CSTAG model is key to ensuring a comprehensive, cohesive understanding of common standards, resulting in higher levels of success and teamwork.
